Medical-Surgical Nursing Department

The Department of Medical-Surgical Nursing has evolved from an entry-level position to a distinct specialty. It is no longer viewed as a stepping-stone but is the solid rock and the backbone of every institution. The Department of Medical-Surgical Nursing deals with Nursing Foundations and Medical-Surgical Nursing for undergraduate and Advanced Nursing Practice, Clinical Specialty, and super specialty and Nurse Practitioner in Critical Care for Post Graduate students. The department is having highly qualified, experienced, and long-standing competent faculty with defined research knowledge who uses various modes and innovative teaching strategies.
The medical and surgical nursing department provides an ideal environment for multi-professional learning. The curriculum emphasizes the state of the art practice and current scientific knowledge; foster self-directed learning, critical thinking, and innovation; encourage research; promote interdisciplinary collaboration, and builds a professional identity. We provide state of art teaching strategies and supervised clinical practice. Moreover, faculty with vast experience and competence is focused to prepare confident, safe, and caring, health professionals. The department provides student-centered teaching and learning by adopting innovative teaching-learning methods like Small Group Learning, Self Learning Module, Inter-professional learning, Context-Based Learning (CBL), Computational Learning, and Multi Interactive Learning Algorithm (MILA). Our department has unique student evaluation methods like OSPE / OSCE, Quantum assessment skill, and Self-assessment method which will create more interest among students in learning and improving their skills.

The department translating the knowledge into practice by providing hands-on skill training with simulation corner & self-learning desk and placing them in Saveetha Medical College and Hospital which is 1200 bedded Multi super specialty with hi-tech investigation and treatment that helps the students to gain confidence in their nursing knowledge, skills, and attitude. In addition to that, the department is offering value-added courses namely Geriatric Nursing and Rehabilitation Nursing at the undergraduate level and Elective course such as Diabetic Nurse Educator, Diabetic Nurse Educator to create more career opportunities for the students to enhance a specialized skill to meet the demand of leading health problems, to promote job opportunity in the global level and to become a nurse entrepreneur. Students are also giving training for AHA accredited BLS, ACLS, HAZMAT provider, and instructor course.

The department conducts many programs like a Guest lecture, Continuing Nursing Education, National level seminars, workshops, conferences, and webinars to update the knowledge and skill in recent advancements in Medical-Surgical Nursing. We observe National and International days related to health to create awareness (hospital and in the community) for the general public by organizing many programmed including health education, screening, and health camp. Faculty members and students are promoted to conduct more research and publication in Scopus indexed journal and also to obtain copyright and patent.

FACILITIES:

Medical Surgical Nursing department has an excellent infrastructure to aid teaching & research activities. The Medical Surgical Nursing lab has got well equipped with adequate number of international Mannequins & simulators that help to amalgamate class room teaching with skill learning successfully where students get hands on experience for various procedures. Simulation corner and self learning desk is designed to give students training for basic nursing procedure to advanced procedures like IV cannulation, oxygen administration, Tracheostomy care, suturing, BLS and endotracheal intubation

RESEARCH

Nursing research is critical and vital to the nursing profession and is necessary for continuing advancements that promote optimal nursing care. Hence the department of Medical Surgical Nursing is constantly motivate the faculty and students to focus on the research activities to promote quality health outcomes for individuals, families, communities and health care systems. Our department has completed 200 projects and 50 publications in national and international indexed journals including scopus indexed.
